Don’t Miss Dakar 2008 this January

This Saturday, January 5 marks the start of the 2008 Lisboa Dakar Rally. The Dakar is thrilling for many reasons, not the least of which is the diversity of the terrain its stages feature and the differing types of vehicles that compete. If you’ve enjoyed WRC Movies in the past, you’ll love the Dakar with its on-road and off-road terrain.

The Dakar rally begins in Lisbon, Portugal with Stage 1 and competitors will cover almost 500 km as they race from Lisbon to Portimao. Each of the 15 stages of the Dakar feature a timed “special” portion that determines standings, and the first stage’s special is 120 km long. This first special features both hard terrain and sand that would halt a Drift D1 Grand Prix competition before the first slide.

On January 6 you can check out stage 2, the route from Portimao to Malagatha which includes a 60 km special and over 530 km of racing. The stage 2 special features mountainous terrain that’s a scenic wonder as well as a thrilling racing challenge. Following the first two Portugal stages, Dakar competitors will cross the Mediterranean bound for Morocco. Morocco is the site of the next 4 stages of the rally route, and even more brutal and challenging terrain.
